Swallowing Therapy is designed to diagnose and remedy dysphagia, which simply means difficulty swallowing.  Dysphagia is common after strokes, following radiation therapy for head and neck cancer patients and in a variety of neurologic disorders. Typical complaints for individuals with dysphagia include:

  • Coughing or choking on foods or liquids

  • Feeling like food is stuck in the throat after swallowing

  • Difficulty chewing food

  • Frequent drooling of saliva

  • Multiple episodes of pneumonia

  • Noticing a gurgling vocal quality during the day and especially after meals

  • Unexplained weight loss and decrease of appetite

After a thorough evaluation of the oral (mouth) and pharyngeal (throat) muscles as well as their function, a therapy program is developed to maximize safety when eating and drinking as well as to improve function in areas of weakness.
